Curious about who we are and why we do what we do? Well, here’s a little behind the scenes sneak into our world at The Borrowed Boutique. We’re more than meets the eye!

CURTAIN CALL…HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Female physician and public health specialist turned momtrapraneur…

While this may sound like an unlikely combination, if you knew me it would make complete sense. I guess I should introduce myself. I’m Emma, the owner, lead stylist, and creative mind behind The Borrowed Boutique. I’m also mommy to a precious but rambunctious four-year old little girl who loves to play dress up.

My path in medicine and public health hasn’t been a detour; instead it has been the driving force that now has me surrounded by tutus, sequins, and designer children’s clothing. After becoming a family physician I entered the world of public health, completing a Masters from Johns Hopkins focused on Women and Children’s Health and International Health. Working with non-profit organizations doing amazing work, I witnessed first hand the health disparities and injustices that women and children suffer in developing countries-from sex trafficking, childhood prostitution, and sexual cleansing rituals to starvation, dehydration, lack of education and poor prenatal care.

After my premie daughter was born I decided to take some time “off” to be a full time mom. And, while I cherished every moment with her, my mind was still spinning with ideas. I wanted to blend my creative side with my passion to make a difference in the lives of other women and children in need. And, of course a children’s designer clothing rental company that gives back to non-profits for each item rented was the first thing that came to mind. :)

Social entrepreneurship had always intrigued me. With companies like TOMS shoes proving that businesses can make a difference when built on a spirit of altruism and giving, I decided to take the leap. What better way to create sustainable funding for organizations already making an impact. So, how did we get into the tutu rental business??? Blame it on my husband and my daughter! After spending a pretty penny on my daughter’s birthday dresses and photo shoots my husband suggested that I should start a rental business. Husbands around the world would thank me for saving them a bundle; and, mothers and photographers could easily get everything they needed at a fraction of the price for photo shoots, special occasions, and weddings.

What would I get out of it?? The most stylish and rewarding time of my life! I LOVE what I do! Coming up with concept designs for editorial magazine shoots, styling models, and creating or sourcing props feels more like play than work. Creating our STYLED TO GIVE campaign that donates 100% of proceeds from styled shoots to our non-profit giving partners and donating time to work as a medical professional and public health consultant with our non-profits fills my heart. My goal is to use something beautiful like a tutu to bring beauty into the life of a less fortunate child. Although my path has been a little unique, it has set me on an amazing journey where the sky truly is the limit.
